Here's what you should know about the 2019 Volunteer of the year!
Chris Arlander was nominated by Lori Moses, the director of Catherine Morrill Day Nursery. Chris has volunteered for that organization for over fourteen years in a variety of ways. Her primary focus has been facilitating four to six “kindergarten” groups per week with five to six children per group. This is an opportunity for children to get extra attention, outside of the much larger classrooms, increasing their early language, literacy and math skills in fun and engaging ways. Besides the academic skills, the children practice self help skills, taking turns, following directions and a host of other “soft” skills to encourage independence and help them succeed. Chris interfaces with the children’s Preschool Teachers to support the goals they are working on in the classrooms. She also interacts with the families and helps out in the front office and in the kitchen.
Chris has also been a valuable member of the planning team as the organization works on plans for celebrating its 100 years of service! Catherine Morrill Day Nursery is Maine’s oldest licensed childcare facility. Their mission is to promote the young child’s total development within a safe and nurturing environment, and to support families and community. It has grown from a custodial care service to a nationally accredited program that promotes young children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. Altrusa of Portland was
