Here's what you should know about the 2025 Volunteer of the year!
On May 21st , Altrusa Club of Portland was pleased to award the 21st Annual Volunteer of the Year award to Deb Smith in recognition of over 20 years of dedicated volunteer service to Maine Senior Games.
Altrusa welcomed Deb along with Maine Senior Games Coordinator Karen Reason and four other volunteers. Deb was nominated by Karen. Among a large field of wonderful nominations from other non-profits in the area, Deb quickly rose to the top.
To quote from Karen's nomination: "As the current Coordinator of the Maine Senior Games, I see how hard she works and how much of an asset she is to the work that I do for the Games. Deb has been involved with the Games since the early 2000’s as an athlete and volunteer and advisory board member. However, in 2020 she brought her willingness to help to a whole new level of commitment. In 2020 the Maine Senior Games was dropped by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging as one of the programs that they were going to support and sponsor.
Deb along with a committed group of volunteers decided to form a 501©3 Non-Profit so that the Maine Senior Games could continue to exist. At that time Deb became the Board Chair and has continued in that role since. Her enthusiasm for this work is outstanding, she helps me with all the programs that we run and is the event coordinator for our Basketball Tournament each year. In addition to helping with organizing activities, marketing the Maine Games, and competing in the Maine Senior Games she also coaches a team of women who compete in the Games as well. As the Coordinator I know I can always count on her to offer good council, help if I need it, and support for our programs. Her dedication and initiative for the Maine Senior Games is unmatched.
Some of the tasks she does on a regular basis are organizing the monthly board meetings, creating the agendas, compiling meeting materials, securing meeting spaces, contacting all board members and sending out communications. Deb annually spearheads the budget formation for board discussion and approval, heads the Marketing Committee, and takes care of annual charitable reports and licenses.
I highly recommend Deb Smith for this award. She is the type of person you want to recognize. Her service on behalf of Mainers 45 and up and the effort to get more Mainers involved in living a healthy, active lifestyle is outstanding. In addition to her work here in Maine she has been involved at the National level as a board member with the National Senior Games. Giving her time to others is something that she exemplifies on a regular basis."
The Altrusa Portland club donated $500 to Maine Senior Games in honor of Deb's exceptional volunteerism.
